Budgeting for a Trip to Spain

Planning ahead and budgeting for your trip can help you enjoy Spain without feeling guilty for your vacation. You can get the best airline prices by booking your trip far in advance of your travels. Paying in cash can help you avoid interest fees that might incur when you use credit cards. Plan a date for your trip. If it takes a year for you to have the money that you need for the ticket and your hotel room, you should set a goal of putting aside a certain amount of money every month until you can afford your trip. This might mean that you won't actually be able to leave for your trip for a year and a half or two years from the date that you decide to go. That's okay. At least you are making a plan and steadily building your funds so that you can travel. Look at the ticket prices in relation to the different seasons of the year. Tickets to Spain will naturally be higher in the high season. Flights and accommodation prices rise during holiday seasons.

If your budget is already stretched you might need to either cut out some of your existing luxuries or consider taking on extra paying work to fund your trip. Working just a couple more hours a week could help you pay for your trip. You should also research the attractions that you'd like to see as well as the accommodation choices in the area. You can stay in a hostel or a hotel. The choices depend on your own comfort level and the amount of money that you are willing to spend. Planning your trip a couple of years before you plan to go, could allow you to stay longer in Spain. Although this tactic might sound extreme, it diminishes some of the pressure associated with funding a major trip, and it can make traveling abroad more of a possibility.

Spend a Week Volunteering in Spain

The Vaughan Town program provides free accommodations and meals

I learned about an unconventional method for spending time in Spain. You can spend six days in Spain as a volunteer, helping professionals practice their English speaking skills. The Vaughan Town volunteer program pays the cost for your accommodations in a hotel. Participants pay for their flight to Madrid, but they spend most of their time in towns surrounding Madrid. Program volunteers must be prepared to spend about 12 hours per day interacting and talking to the business people who are trying to learn English, but volunteers do have time to enjoy the area around them and the hotel. The volunteers play games with the English language learners and participate in other activities with them. Significant time is spent getting to know each other.

The program works because the English language learners are exposed to people with different dialects and speaking styles. They can improve their fluency and comprehension. The English Language learners have a great opportunity to  listen to native English-speakers speak in the same way that the native speakers would speak with their own friends or family members. The learners practice their own speaking skills, working on their word choices and learning how to use English phrases. The trip can be a great opportunity to make some new friends and help others in a laid back environment.

Volunteers can choose the town (here's the list) where they want to volunteer and they have a choice from among several available dates throughout the year. Accommodations include a former palace  in Villacarriedo, and hotels in Gredos, Alba de Layos, El Rancho de la Aldeguela, Valdelavilla, or the Sheraton Santa Maria. You can choose to extend your trip by footing the bills yourself for a few extra days in Spain. Some volunteers choose to spend time exploring Spain on their own for a few days before the volunteer experience. This sounds like a great deal!

Cool Things to See in Madrid

Madrid is definitely one of the areas that I’d love to see in Spain. Landmarks like the Royal Palace, and Templo Debod are must-see attractions. The Royal Palace captures my interest, because first of all, I love luxurious places, and secondly, I love palaces. I think that they are magical places, and I think that my fantasies make palace living a bit more glamorous than the reality of it all. Today, the palace is the venue for ceremonies, and the Royal Family of Madrid do not live there. The palace, however, is available for tours and you can select a bus tour to visit the plalce and other attractions in Madrid.

For those of you who love gorgeous, old architecture, you will probably get great pleasure in touring the courtesan district in Madrid.  Depending on your preferences, you can choose bus tours or walking tours. A short walking tour will give you the flexibility to see the sights closer than a bus tour, however. The Habsburgs area is famous for buildings that exemplify architecture from the Renaissance period.

If you do decide to visit Templo Debod or the Temple of Debod, you will find that it is in the same vicinity as the palace. The temple is inside the Parque del Oeste. The temple was originally built in Egypt, but it was relocated to Madrid after it was donated in 1968. You will walk through some stone structures to arrive at the actual temple. Inside, the lure is the hieroglyphics on the wall, and there are also dome photos inside to help you learn more about the structure. Although it’s fun to take your time and explore a city on your own, when you take a tour you have the opportunity to interact and learn from experts – a valuable experience.

Visit Beautiful Benalmadena in Spain

I had been looking into staying for a couple of weeks in Benalmadena. The area is attractive due its warm weather, beaches, and entertainment. It looks like a cool place to rent an apartment and spend time lounging on the beach or visiting places like the Selwo Marino Dolphinarium, a marina where you can watch shows featuring dolphins and sea lions and interact with dolphins and watch the penguins.

Tivoli World, an amusement park in Benalmadena, could also give you a diversion. Families who travel with kids, might light to visit for the water ride, roller coaster, and go-karts. The park boasts that it has at least 40 attractions for guests. The park offers a pass which allows guests to ride 37 of the rides for  about $15. The Texas Grill restaurant a Chinese restaurant, and an establishment serving Andalusian food is there as well.

There are about 12 beaches in Benalmadena. Some of the beaches are rather rocky, but the best beaches include Bil Bil beach, Malpesquera beach, and Santa Ana Beach. The usual water sports, sailing, paragliding, and boat tours are also available. The area is also known for its golf courses. I happen to be a horrible golfer, but it's fun to try.

You can take a tour bus to some of the surrounding areas, including Madrid. It's possible to find accommodations walking distance to the market, bars, restaurants, and the beach. I think that this area is great for people who would like to experience Spain in a reasonably safe area with other foreign visitors.

Explore the Castles of Spain

Experience the journey of the lifetime, traveling and staying in the castles of Spain. I'm definitely adding this idea to my list of places to travel and things to experience. I stayed in a castle in England, and I loved it. I can't wait to experience the castles of Spain. The Paradores Turismo has at least 90 properties on its roster. Some of these properties are castles, and the public is invited to book rooms in these castles. The experience doesn't end at staying in a castle, which is already a cool experience. The organization has castle tours with various themes. The Culture Trail tour offers visits to  castles. In the route from the Route of the Castles, you start at the Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo and spend two nights at two other castle hotels. You pay for the travel between the castles, but the journey includes accommodations.

There are more than 2,000 castles in Spain. Some of these castles are available for tours, and some are not well-kept. Alhambra is definitely a must-see castle in Spain. It is a beautifully romantic palace and was named after its red walls. The name literally means Red Fortress. There are guided tours available of Alhambra, which is helpful if you need transportation to the palace from your accommodation.

Although it is fun to see the castles, from experience, I think that spending the night is fun, mysterious, and possibly romantic, depending on the castle. If you do not particularly want to rough it, there are luxury four star castle hotels like the Parador Ciudad Rodrigo with air conditioning, TVs, and mini bars. You can see pictures and read descriptions of the castles online.  It's also possible to view streaming videos of the castles that kept by the Paradores Turismo, which makes it easier to decide on the perfect castle to spend the night.
